Las Gallinas November 2008
Autumn! Or as it's known over here - Fall. Definitely the best time of year. Fresh mornings and so many different colors in nature as some of the trees turn red which plays well on the color wheel as when they are offset by the evergreen trees. The first real chance we've had to go out since my leg's been bad, but it appears to be healing enough to go on a walk so we headed out to Las Gallinas being one of the best places we went to earlier in the year for seeing wildlife.
Autumn also appears to be the best time for birds. I'm assuming that a lot of the birds that are around now are from “up North” and have traveled down for the winter. Regardless, it's nice to see them.
Ducks were the order of the day and there were a lot of them. Many different species and many bright colors. The bird of the day is probably the Northern Harrier, but it's definitely not the picture of the day - all I've got below are four blurred photos of it as it flew past. Still - at least I got it. The full list of birds are as follows:
- Canada Goose
- Green Winged Teal
- Northern Shoveler
- Snowy Egret
- American Coot
- Northern Pintail
- American Wigeon
- Cinnamon Teal
- Greater Scaup
- Lesser Scaup
- Mallard
- American White Pelican
- Double-Crested Cormorant
- Long-Billed Dowitcher
- Black-Crowned Night Heron
- American Tree Sparrow
- White-Crowned Sparrow
- Northern Harrier
- Great Blue Heron
If you double click on an image it will bring up its tags so you can see what each individual bird is (if you're interested). Bear in mind though, that this is my best guess based on looking at the photo and comparing it to what's in my books. Some of the birds are difficult to tell apart so I may have them wrong.
