Long story, but ended up in San Francisco close to Golden Gate Park with about an hour of light left in the day so decided to go to Stow Lake. It's one of the more common lakes with visitors to the park, but one I've not been to before. I knew the lake was a breading ground for herons (great blue herons) and that there are also other birds that stop by from time to time. There also appears to be a number of domestic birds that have been released into the lake that have subsequently bread with the local mallards. There's a duck below with a white breast that I thought was something new that I've not seen before, but I can't find it in any book so think it's a mallard hybrid. The trip was not in vein as I got my first picture of a pied-billed grebe. Most of the pictures turned out quite bad due to the poor lighting. Those I've kept include:
