We were invited down to Laguna Seca by a friend to watch a friend of the friend race ... you know how it goes! Not that it really takes a lot of encouraging to get me trackside. Had a really good time - it wasn't a major event - several races of many categories of folks in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).
This was my first time at Laguna Seca and you've got to take a look at the corkscrew haven't you? Be rude not to really. Bloody great big hill to climb up in order to get there, but well worth it. There was lots of action up there and I got in a few good pictures. I used this opportunity to practice panning (using a low shutter speed and tracking the subject such that the picture has the subject in focus and the background blurred to portray the image of speed). There is a mix of panning and regular shots. The panning shots are OK, but somewhat lacking the right background to get a great blur. Blurred gravel just looks like regular gravel at the end of the day. You can tell those photos that are supposed to be panning shots by looking at the car's wheels as these are clearly blurred. I also should have probably used an even slower shutter speed (I was at 1/80 and probably should have come down to 1/60 at least). Anyway, it's all good learning experience as they say.
